Muggle clothing had always been something Hiccup had preferred over wizard robes, though he does make a mental note to send an order to Madam Malkin's - his clothing is getting smaller again, if the way the hoodie stretches across his chest is any indication. Dropping his towel off from his hair over one of the stalls, Hiccup runs his fingers through the wild auburn mess, beginning to do the little braid and looking at Jack when he speaks.]
Sure. Where're we going?
watch me take rooms invented by the videogames
This time he doesn't hesitate, he's telling himself again that there's nothing wrong with some friendly touching, so he gets closer and ruffles Hiccup's hair. Would he be allowed to help with the braid some day? He still remembers how to do it after his sister taught him.]
You don't look half bad in those, you know. [His turn to wink.] Thaaaat is a surprise. But I'll let you choose the how. We can sneak through a corridor I found ooooor you can fly us there. Which I think is the way it's supposed to be entered anyway.
lmao (also insert 'A Whole New World')
He ducks his head out from under Jack's hand at the hair ruffle, tying the braid off with a hair tie he kept on his person. Who knew? Maybe some day he'd let those fingers run themselves through his hair and tie the braid for him.]
Well you're the one that picked them out for me, I should hope so. [He smiles at the notion that Jack set up a surprise, before reaching to grab his broom from where it's resting, shouldering it.] If it's supposed to be entered by flying, then it's supposed to be entered by flying. C'mon, then.
pffft just the other day I was imagining Stoick as the Sultan and Pitch as Jafar
[This is their regular kind of teasing, what helped them to be good friends, so it shouldn't bother Jack. And to be honest, it doesn't, but lately he can't help noticing how much it sounds like flirting. Hiccup winked at him before, for fuck's sake. He should stop, he really should, because he feels like isn't being honest to his friend anymore... but he simply can't. He can't let go of this, because it's all that he has.
When Hiccup accepts flying them there, Jack's face transforms in a second, beaming as if he was the one that won a cup today. He doesn't have a lot of experience flying, but the few times he tried it felt amazing, being up there with just the wind. And with Hiccup being the amazing flier that he is, this can only get a thousand times better.
Laughing with glee, he moves the paper bag to his left hand and uses his right to grab Hiccup by his wrist and drag him outside, taking a few steps until they're right in the middle of the way between training grounds and changing rooms. He turns around and points at the castle, sounding excited as hell. He's never entered that room the "right way".]
See that window over there? With the Hogwarts crest?
[It isn't exactly a window, more like a stained glass, but one can't expect Jack to know the right term. He's bouncing on his feet as he explains.]
You have to fly us right through the H.
lmao Stoick is an angrier version of the Sultan
[There goes his voice again, deepening into a purr. He really needs to stop that, and it's obvious in the way he lifts his free hand to rub the back of his neck awkwardly after, shifting his fingers through still wet hair. He wasn't flirting with his best friend. No, no he definitely wasn't. But you are, part of him whispered, and Hiccup shook his head to clear that voice out.
One look at Jack's face, though, is enough to make his own cheeks redden and he glances away from the Slytherin boy only to be dragged outside, nearly stumbling after him. Hiccup stands himself up straight when they stop, pulling his broom from where it rested over his shoulder and standing it brush-side down, taking his arm back and squinting to examine the entrance Jack was pointing at.]
You mean the stained glass window? [Huh. He'd never seen that one before. Hiccup rolled his shoulders, then swept his broom up and between his legs, raising an eyebrow at Jack.] Y'know, you're gonna have to lean in really close to me if we're flying straight through the H.
you know Toothless would make a fantastic tiger
He nods at Hiccup's question, assuming that's what those kind of decorative glasses are called. His bouncing stops when the broom gets ready and hears his friend's observation. He gulps, awkwardness suddenly taking over. This is your real plan, to be close to him and then take him to a private place, just the two of yo- NO. A shake of his head and a determined look after, and he gets on the broom behind Hiccup, using an attachment spell to stick the paper bag with the food to the end of the broom. That way nothing falls in the way and nothing stands between themSTOP.]
Why, Mister Haddock, is that some kind of invitation? [Fighting the need to put his arms around his Hiccup's waist, he opts for resting his hands on his friend's shoulders. But he can't stop himself from leaning in and whispering in his ear.] Show me.
yeeeep
[The whisper in his ear makes him shiver before he staightens his shoulders, hands wrapping around the wood of the broom with a good, firm grip. Hiccup stops himself from thinking any further on that and scoots back a little until his butt is nestled almost in Jack's lap. The idea makes his knuckles whiten in their grip around the broom and he leans in closer to the handle before he launches them into the air.
It's a good thing Jack stuck the paper bag to the end of the broom with an attachment spell because it would have flown off at the speed Hiccup is going. He really hopes Jack fixes that grip, not because he wants to feel Jack's arms around him. No, definitely not. They spiral up into the air, before finally the flight evens out. Hiccup lets out a soft laugh, looking over his shoulder at Jack.]
Didn't scare you, did I? Sorry, I get kind of carried away when I'm in the air.
no subject
[He keeps joking. He HAS to, or he's going to die in this trip. His hands squeeze Hiccup's shoulders, hesitating, but any attempts at rational thinking are lost when he feels that butt against his lap. Godfuckingdammit. Know what, to hell with everything. He can let guilt depress him later - Hiccup wants a tighter grip? He'll give him a tighter grip. Jack lowers his arms and puts them around Hiccup's waist, hands taking a hold of the hoodie he picked for him. He's wearing the clothes I chose. I'm actually hugging him. We are--
The sudden speed interrupts his line of thought, thank goodness, or he would start regretting things again. Hiccup isn't the only one laughing, though, Jack is doing it too, slow and low at first, fully excited laughter a second later. There's nothing here but the two of them and the clouds. It's amazing.]
WOOHOO! [He would put his arms up in the air, like he did in roller-coasters, but he doesn't want to let go of Hiccup. He's been allowed to touch and he's going to enjoy it for as long as he can. When his friend turns around with that silly question, Jack laughs some more and rests his chin on Hiccup's shoulder.] Are you fucking kidding me? This is AWESOME! You are awesome. Come on, Hic. "Carried away" is good. Just let go. Let's have some fun!
no subject
Well y'know, flying outside of classes and Quidditch is kinda forbidden.
[Not that he's not breaking a million school rules by keeping a dragon, knowing Dragonese, inventing his own spells, etc. etc. Still, Hiccup inclines his head, lowering himself closer to the broom again.]
Hang onto something.
[Preferably me. Hiccup kicks that thought away and points the broom into a steep dive, the two of them spiraling down to the ground before he pulls them up at the last second, swooping up at the same speed in a straight line before they curled around in circles like a coil. Not one of his fanciest moves, but Jack was - as far as he knew - a first time flier. He was better off playing it safe, especially with someone else on his broom. Once they leveled out again, Hiccup shot them off in the direction of the stained glass window, pressing his body down fully to the broom.]
Better lean in close, don't want the window to smack you off or anything.
no subject
[No need to hide that grin, Jack is wearing one of his own too, one that widens when he notices Hiccup's cheeks reddening again. He tells himself that this touchy situation didn't cause it, blushing is just Hiccup's standard reaction to compliments. Right.
Hang onto something? Don't mind him if he does. He tightens his hold around Hiccup and pushes his head farther over his friend's neck, wanting to have a good 'first person pov' view. Jack has flied before, briefly, but nothing like this. He whoops and laughs with each whirl, enjoying this feeling of pure freedom surrounding him, the wind blowing his hair back... and of course, having Hiccup in his arms.]
A little late for that, how do you think I found out that entrance? [Jack's little exploring trips through the castle always end up with a bruise or two, and let's not even mention what happens when he tries to visit the Forbidden Forest (if Hagrid doesn't catch him first, that is).
Bruises or not, he can't let an opportunity like this pass, so he does as Hiccup asked. After taking a deep breath, he leans in and presses his body against his friend's, hands dropping to hold onto his hips. This is so wrong in many levels, he shouldn't be enjoying it as much as he is.]
Alright, let's do this!
no subject
[Flushing bright red is his standard reaction to compliments from a person he likes, yes, so it's not entirely a lie. He shifts a little under Jack's chin, shoulders hunching a little but not in order to brush him off, for a more streamlined effect really. Streamlining their bodies would probably help get them through the window more.
He feels Jack's hands grab hold of his hips and he feels a shiver roll up his spine as a result. It's definitely not something he would have thought he'd be feeling anytime soon. Hiccup kicks the broom into high gear and sends them shooting off in the direction of the window. Luckily they don't slam into the rest of the window and instead fly straight into the room Jack pointed out, Hiccup swerving his broom into a stop.]
no subject
Jack isn't exactly doing that at the moment, though. Maybe because he's been here before... or more probably, because he's a little too busy laughing and celebrating their smooth entrance. He even lets go of Hiccup to throw his arms in the air like he wanted.]
Fuck yeah, we did it! ...well, you did it. But you get my point. [After the way they stood on the broom during their little trip, Jack isn't afraid of touching Hiccup anymore, so soon his grabbing his friend again. An arm goes around his chest, bringing him closer, his own chest against Hiccup's back, and his free hand goes to ruffle all that brown hair.] You're so fucking cool! Have I told you lately? Best flier in the school right here! And he's my friend.
no subject
That was what Hiccup kept telling himself anyway.]
I wouldn't say I'm the best flyer. [He inclined his head and rolled his eyes.] Gryffindor's Seeker put up a good fight today, don't let her overhear you say that.
[He let himself enjoy the feeling of Jack around him before gently shrugging him off him and dismounting his broom, letting it hover for the other boy to do the same.]
So this is your special place, huh?
no subject
Do you always have to do that, goddammit?! Stop thinking so low of yourself! For fuck's sake, you just won a cup! You keep your own dragon, you tutor guys older than you, you... you don't think I'd lie to you when I say you're awesome, do you?
[Or does his opinion simply not matter? Jack sighs when Hiccup shrugs him off, telling himself not to take it personally, that's just how his friend is. But it's so... so... frustrating! Hiccup deserves a good shake, damn.]
Huh... I guess you can call it that? I don't come here often, it's not easy to reach. [He jumps off the broom and uses a counter-spell to de-attach the bag. As soon as it's on his hands, he tears it open on the floor to lay down its contents: some sandwiches, muffins and two bottles of pumpkin juice, which he opens with a quick wave of his wand.] I almost forgot about it, I've been spending less alone time since... well, since I have you.
[A bit embarrassed and with a sheepish smile, he hands Hiccup a bottle, holding his own up for a toast.] I know it's not exactly a party, but I hope you like it anyway. Congrats on your victory, Captain.
no subject
[Hiccup runs a hand through his hair with a small roll of his eyes, pursing his lips together. Jack was always adamant that he should take more pride in what he did, and he knew he should, but Hiccup wasn't boastful like the others from his village. There's not really much he can say on the matter that they haven't already argued about to tears.
There's no need for him to get upset at his best friend. Not when his body is still tingling from having him pressed so close.
Hiccup props his broom up against a wall and joins Jack on the floor, watching him pull things out of the paper bag. His cheeks tinge a bit pink when Jack says he hasn't been alone as often as he used to and he feels his chest swell with butterflies. It was true for him too. Before Jack, his attention was split between taking care of Toothless, his grades, Quidditch and helping others study. Well, it still was like that but now he had someone to break his attention away.
With a brush of his fingers against Jack's, he takes the bottle of pumpkin juice, lifting the neck towards the other boy's.]
Are you kidding me? This is the best kind of party. [His cheeks colour a bit more.] Thanks.
no subject
It takes him a second to react to the toast, the brush of their hands making him freeze and shiver and the same time. So much for suppressing these feelings! But never mind that, Hiccup is blushing and thanking him and saying he actually likes this - approval, fuck yeah! Jack's expression quickly changes to one of delight, happy as hell for having done something well for a change.]
Any time, you know it. [He just stays there for a moment, smiling at Hiccup like fool, until he realizes he's staring and turns his head to admire the colorful lights. Wait, are his cheeks a bit red too or is just part of the magic of the room? Jack takes a swig of the pumpkin juice, reminding himself nothing is going on and this is just more of their hanging out together. Yeah, there. He can talk like he normally does.]
Do you know why I suddenly remembered this room? I was trying to copy the colors when I was practicing the spell to make those... you know, banners I put up during the match. [A beat.] ...did you see them?
no subject
He looks out the corner of his eye at Jack as he confesses that, unable to help chuckling into the bottle in a way that makes a noise. Hiccup leaned off his hand, running his fingers through his hair.]
Of course I saw them. I nearly collided with one of the Chasers because I was gaping like an idiot.
[The way he smiles should tell Jack the reason why; because I never thought anyone would do something like that for me.]
no subject
I-I thought that you- haha- that you saw the Snitch!
[The warm feeling makes a comeback at the sight of Hiccup's smile, but Jack just keeps laughing. Why? Well, for many reasons, and not only because it's funny. He laughs because it makes him happy to see Hiccup smiling like that. He laughs because they're having some fun together like they should be. He laughs because Hiccup is one adorable dork and he's pretty much doomed. He laughs because he's realizing how doomed he is and he needs to hide it. He laughs because he needs to make his mouth do something else and stop the urges of eating the hell out of that cute smile. Such an idiot, Frost.
He takes a deep breath to calm himself down before speaking again.] Wait, let me guess: spelling mistake?
no subject
His dad hadn't liked his friendship with Fishlegs back when they were kids. There was no way in hell he'd approve of something like this. Then again, when had Hiccup ever needed his dad's approval except for when he was really young?
Hiccup goes to reply before he hiccups due to drinking too much pumpkin juice and presses the back of his hand to his mouth, looking back at Jack at the question.]
Actually no, surprisingly. [He shrugs his shoulders before he smiles shyly.] Nobody's ever done that for me before, so I was surprised.
no subject
That little sound almost starts a new round of laughing, but he manages to keep it in a chuckle, not wanting to make things worse. A hand moves to check out the sandwiches, looking for the one Hiccup likes. Jack made sure of asking the elves for it, those little buggers better have listened.]
Does Hiccup have the hiccups now?
[Some teasing doesn't hurt anybody, right? When he finds the right sandwich, he hands it to his friend, maybe the food can help with that little problem... though part of him doesn't want to fix it. It's cute, really. Hiccuping Hiccup, hehe.]
"Surprisingly"? Why, thank you, Haddock, for that vote of confidence. [He pouts a bit, but it's obvious he's playing around. He knows his spelling isn't the best.] Just so you know, I double checked. Hell, I TRIPLE checked. I wanted to support you, not to embarrass you. [He glances at Hiccup, noticing the shy smile, then looks down, a hand going to rub the back of his neck. Is it time for awkwardness? Oh yay.] I... kinda thought that would be the case, so... yeah. Sorry if it wasn't that colorful in the end.
no subject
Yeah yeah. Laugh it up, Frost.
[He rolls his eyes and sets the bottle down off to the side so he doesn't knock it over, hand coming up to rest on his knees. Hiccup gives a swallow lf breath, coming to a decision, and shakes his head, closing his eyes.]
It was plenty colourful. Thank you.
[And then he turned his head and planted a kiss on Jack's cheek.]
no subject
[It's so cute! Jack's own brain wants to offer lots of scenarios too, but he keeps shutting it up. Can't lose control now, can't ruin what is a perfect friendly moment! They're laughing and teasing and hanging out like a good ol' pair of bros...
...who get kisses on the cheek.
Jack's stops breathing for a moment, eyes closing and his body shivering. Forget about butterflies, his stomach has giant spiders by now. He doesn't want to read too much into this, Hiccup is being thankful right? But guys just don't kiss other guys on the cheek. They shake hands, they pat their backs. Unless there's a wizard tradition he hasn't been told about?
His lips touched me. He takes a deep breath and turns to look at Hiccup in the eye, wondering how to proceed next. Jack usually doesn't mind taking risks, but this time... this time an incorrect reading can make him lose the most important person in his life. Maybe... an equally sweet but neutral gesture? To test the waters? Jack's hand goes to brush some hair from Hiccup's face. He's smiling gently, eyes a mix of emotions.]
You are welcome. You know I like doing things like this for you, right? [Hair taken care of, and after some hesitation that includes lower lip biting, Jack's hand cups Hiccup's cheek. Friendly enough but still a step above usually bro-tier gestures.] Can't promise my actions won't chase away those girls eying you lately though.
[There's so much hidden in those words. It's a joke because that's the only defense he knows in awkward situations. A way to test what Hiccup wants. And a good amount of truth too, even if he feels like a jerk for it - hypocritical, superficial idiots don't deserve Hiccup's company, and he can make sure they get that message.]
no subject
He watches Jack's face, preparing himself for rejection, for laughter at his own expense, morbidly preparing the one liner to follow. Hiccup sucks in a breath as he feels Jack reach out, fingers brushing hair from his face and Hiccup forces his eyes to close shut with a shudder, unable to look at that gentle smile. His hands fist against his legs, heart hammering the inside of his chest. The hand cupping his face makes him bite his bottom lip, lashes opening slightly to reveal green eyes.]
Y-yeah, well, I think they're getting a bit tired of the stick I have to beat them off with.
[Sweet Merlin he sounds like a tongue tied idiot.
Hiccup finally manages to open his eyes and look properly at Jack, swallowing down a nervous bundle of bile in his throat. Trembling fingers reach up, tongue poking out to lick at his lips as he cupped it around Jack's on his cheek.]
no subject
...Right?]
No need to waste your stick like that. One word and I'll take care of them like I did with your cousin.
[His eyes follow the tongue and he gulps - there's this huge urge to jump and take those lips for his own, and considering how he's about to lose it, he would've done just that, but there's a little thing stopping him.]
...you're trembling. [His hand leaves Hiccup's cheek to hold the hand cupping his, fingers closing softly around Hiccup's, trying to be comforting. Jack could be an egoistical shit sometimes, but this is his best and only friend and the only person he puts above anything else. Above himself.] I don't want you to be uncomfortable. Should I stop touching you?
[His voice breaks when he asks that, his insides turning, the fool side of his brain protesting about that offer. He doesn't want to stop touching Hiccup... but he wants to lose him even less.]
no subject
[As soon as the urgent way he says that one word leaves his mouth, Hiccup clams his lips shut, overbite digging into the bottom one and his eyes closing again. Damnit. He swallows again, Adams apple bobbing on his neck.]
I...I mean...I'm... [Come on, Haddock, think.] I'm just a little cold. That's all.
[So lame. So, so lame. But it's not like he can admit that his stomach is doing twists at the idea of rejection, that Jack has been playing this whole friendship up for months and the moment he wants something more, there's a whole bunch of people watching and laughing at him. That was how it worked for nerds, right? Hiccup reached up to quickly wipe at a stray tear with his free hand, pulling his away from Jack's.
Fool.
What kind of fool would he have to be to believe anything could happen?]
